Inspiration from Outside In

A) The Artist as Subject

In January 2019, I became part of an artwork, thanks to The Decameron Retold project by Vancouver artist Adad Hannah. The project is a series of photographs and video tableaux vivants featuring costumed models remaining as still as possible. For this project, one full day a week found me at the Richmond Art Gallery volunteering (painting, moving, posing, etc). It was such a transformative experience. Adad’s process is very community oriented and involves many people. My own creative process is me alone in my studio painting away. Only after my work is finished does it enter into social and community involvement. It was such an enlivening experience to be part of a different way of making art, starting with community and ending with the art piece. If you’d like to learn more about Adad’s work, click here. (Can you spot me in one of the videos?)

B) The Artist as Viewer

In March 2022, I saw Shawn Hunt’s The First Moonrise exhibition at Equinox Gallery, and I was deeply moved by his paintings. They were sculptural, monochromatic, and imbedded with stunning visual storytelling. I visited many times, and it was deeply meaningful to me to remember the enriching and enlivening experience that can be had through viewing art. I also started a savings account, so that one day I could live with one of his paintings. If you’d like to learn more about his work click here.
